I am a sucker for a romance movie. I remember watching Ghost as a teenager and immediately falling under the spell of romance. Although every movie in this genre is quite similar (a handsome lead actor and a lovable lead actress overcome whatever obstacles are in their way to be together) I still enjoy a happy ending, no matter how predictable it may be. And there are bound to be a few tears along the way. Here are the top five romantic movies that I can watch over and over again.
~ 1) Ghost
Ghost is my absolute favorite movie! I know every word by heart. Yeah, the movie is a bit dated and the special effects aren’t really the best, but the love story makes you forget all of that. Sexy Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore work so well together and the chemistry between them is so strong it almost makes you believe they are a real life couple. It tells the magic of being in love and how strong the feelings can be, even after death. The ending makes me cry EVERY time! Make sure you have tissues.
Watching Ghost for the first time all of those years ago also gave me my favorite song. My parents can tell you how annoying it was to listen to me play it over and over and over. I believe it is one of the best love songs and I still love listening to it.
~ 2) Sleepless in Seattle
Sleepless in Seattle is a movie about a widower and his son. Feeling that his father needs a wife, the son calls into a radio show and gets a huge response. Who will they choose? Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are two of my favorite actors and I loved this movie as a teenager. The soundtrack introduced me to Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Durante and Harry Connick Jr. A romantic movie and sappy love songs had me dreaming of future romances and dancing at my wedding.
~ 3) An Affair to Remember
Through Sleepless in Seattle I was also introduced to An Affair to Remember. (Meg Ryan was watching An Affair to Remember when she decided to ask Tom Hanks to meet her on the top of the Empire State building.) Carey Grant and Deborah Kerr meet on a cruise ship and fall in love, even though they are both in serious relationships with other people. After the cruise they must decide if they will be together and if both believe they should be they will meet on top of the Empire State building on Valentine’s Day. Will they both agree to give their love a chance? I love Carey Grants charm and Deborah Kerr’s singing. My favorite scenes are when they meet his grandmother and the very ending of the movie. If you haven’t seen this movie yet get some tissues and watch it right away – if you’re a hopeless romantic like me then you’ll love it.
~ 4) 50 First Dates
My husband laughs at me every time I put this movie on because I have watched it so many times. I love Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler together and this movie always makes me smile. I think the idea behind this movie is so sweet. He is so in love with her that he gets her to fall for him over and over again, every day coming up with new ways to get her attention and win her heart. If that’s not true love I don’t know what is.
~ 5) The Proposal
Some people may say this isn’t really one of the best romance movies out there but I absolutely love it! Sandra Bullock begging Ryan Reynolds to marry her so she can get a green card results in some pretty funny interactions between them. I can’t even pick a favorite part. I love Sandra Bullock dancing around in the woods singing ‘Get Low’ by Lil Jon, or the scene where she opens up one night and talks a bit about herself, or the ending, when they realize they are actually in love. And once you see Oscar Nunez dance to ‘Relax’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood you will never, ever, get the song out of your head! With romance, humor, great actors (including Betty White), as well as gorgeous lighting and scenery, this is a must see if you haven’t watched it yet.
It was hard to narrow my list down to just five. If there are some movies here you haven’t see then grab some chocolate and some tissues, curl up on the couch and enjoy. Or, even if you have already seen them, curl up with your snacks and tissues and watch them again!
What are your favorite romantic movies? There are so many more I haven’t mentioned. I would love to hear of a few new ones I haven’t seen yet. I love a good romance movie. You can leave a list of your favorites below.
